Khaleda Khammas's Bio
One of the founders of the Emirates Thalassemia Society, United Arab Emirates.
Her journey against thalassemia began in 1989 when her first son became ill with the disease, and she decided to collect information about thalassemia and how to help and care for her son so that he could live a normal life. She used to spend a lot of time with the children, giving them gifts and toys. The patients loved her and considered her a mother to them. They began requesting that she stay with them throughout the days of treatment, which prompted officials at the Dubai Health Authority to invite her to be responsible for the social service department at the Thalassemia Center when it opened in 1995. She worked in the Ministry of Education and at the Thalassemia Center in Dubai, as a volunteer with the Emirates Thalassemia Society since 1997, and finally received a shield from children with thalassemia, in which they described her as “Mother of Thalassemia.” She took the initiative to launch a competition entitled “What is Thalassemia,” which is implemented at the school and university levels with the aim of introducing new generations to the disease. In 2012, she won the “October Personality” award, after Emirates Today chose her from among a number of nominees. Khammas holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education and Psychology.
In 2015, she was honored with her husband, Abdul Basit Madras, by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum , Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, among 44 Emirati personalities in the second session of the UAE Pioneers Initiative, as the first to establish a Thalassemia Humanitarian Society.
