Safwan Dahoul's Bio

Provided by Manhom

A Syrian visual artist and faculty member at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University, he is considered one of the most important contemporary Arab artists.

Dahoul's painting style is inspired by ancient Assyrian and Pharaonic art, as well as by some European schools such as Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel. He relies little on color to construct the composition and expression of his paintings, but rather on strong drawing that tightly embraces their elements and colors.

Dahoul's paintings are held in numerous private and public collections, including the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, the Barjeel Art Foundation in Sharjah, the National Museum of Damascus, the Samawit Collection in Dubai, the Farjam Collection in Dubai, and the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development in Kuwait.

Upon his return to Syria, he began teaching at the Faculty of Fine Arts and became known for his melancholic, black-and-white works, which offer influences from Picasso's Cubist style to Assyrian and Pharaonic art. Since the late 1980s, Dahoul has developed an ongoing body of work examining the dream state. His "dream" works explore the physical and psychological effects of alienation, isolation, and longing that permeate the human experience at various stages of life.

He presented his first solo exhibition in 1989, and participated in solo and group exhibitions, including: "Ayyam Gallery DIFC" and "11 Alserkal Avenue" in Dubai in 2016, 2017, and 2018; "Samsung Blue Square" and "Busan Museum of Art" in South Korea in 2014; "Ayyam Gallery Beirut" in 2014 at "Ayyam Gallery"; and "Ayyam Gallery" in "DIFC" in 2011 and 2014.

He received his PhD in 1997 from the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Belgium, and a postgraduate diploma in 1985 from the University of Damascus. He graduated from the Department of Photography at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus in 1983, and completed further studies at the Higher School of Fine Arts in Belgium in 1997.
