The American University of Beirut was founded in 1866 as the Syrian Protestant College and assumed its current name in 1920.

It is a private, non-profit Lebanese university that adopts the American model of education. Arabic was used as the official language of instruction for the first 17 years before switching to English, which remains the language of instruction to this day.

The university offers more than 140 academic programs at the bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and professional levels, such as MD, through seven accredited colleges:

  • College of Agriculture and Food Sciences.
  • College of Arts and Sciences.
  • College of Engineering and Architecture.
  • College of Health Sciences.
  • Faculty of Medicine.
  • Faculty of Nursing (Rafik Hariri University).
  • College of Business Administration (Sulaiman Al-Olayan).

The university's campus extends across the heart of Beirut, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. It includes comprehensive facilities, including the Nami Jafet Library, a student center, a private beach, sports facilities, university residences, and multiple cultural and academic centers.

The university is committed to international academic standards and embraces the principles of critical thinking, free dialogue, and openness. It is an educational institution open to all students without discrimination based on race, religion, economic status, or political affiliation.
